Starting the Qur’an as an adult: a gentle first step

ابدأ

Many adults carry a quiet wish to read the Qur’an well. Some learned as children and forgot. Some never had the chance. Many feel embarrassed to begin — as if everyone else already knows. If that is you, you are in good company, and you are exactly who we built USTADAH for.

You are not behind — you are beginning

The Prophet ﷺ spoke directly to the learner who finds recitation hard:

“One who is proficient in the Qur’an is with the noble, upright, recording angels; and one who falters in it and finds it difficult will have a double reward.”Sahih Muslim 798

The struggle itself is rewarded. Every slow, careful word counts. And Allah tells us in Surah Al-Qamar that He has made the Qur’an easy to remember and reflect upon (Al-Qamar 54:17).

What your first lessons look like

  • A friendly conversation first. Your teacher listens to where you are — whether that is the letters or full verses — without judgement.
  • Sounds before speed. You will focus on pronouncing each letter correctly. Speed comes later, on its own.
  • Short daily practice. Ten focused minutes a day does more than one long session a week.
  • Reciting to your teacher. Hearing gentle corrections is how recitation improves. It gets easier every time.

Three habits that help

Choose a fixed time. Many learners attach practice to a daily prayer, so it becomes part of the day rather than something extra to remember.

Listen before you recite. Listening to a skilled reciter trains your ear. Then repeat slowly, a phrase at a time.

Be patient with yourself. Progress in recitation is steady rather than sudden. Mark small wins: a letter you now pronounce correctly, a verse you can read without stopping.
